Every SDA journey starts somewhere.
Sometimes it begins with a conversation.
Around twelve months ago, Regional Tenancy Manager Jenelle was introduced to a participant whose Support Coordinator believed she might be able to help navigate the Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) process.
That first meeting was all about understanding the possibilities.
The participant arrived with a clear idea of where they thought they wanted to live. But as anyone who has navigated SDA knows, finding the right home is about much more than just location.
Jenelle began by explaining her role as a Tenancy Manager with an SDA provider.
In many ways, the role is similar to a real estate agent but with additional layers of advocacy and collaboration.
A Tenancy Manager works closely with the participant and their support team to:
• Understand the participant’s functional needs
• Identify preferred locations and lifestyle priorities
• Source SDA properties that may be suitable
• Arrange property viewings with the participant and their supports
• Liaise with landlords and the NDIA to ensure everything aligns with SDA requirements
From that very first meeting, Jenelle began working alongside the participant and their support team to explore what type of SDA home would truly suit them.
As the conversations unfolded, something interesting happened.
The area the participant originally thought they wanted to live in slowly shifted. After exploring options together, a new location emerged one that would actually bring them closer to family and their support network, something that would ultimately make everyday life much easier.
Because the goal of SDA isn’t simply to find a house.
It’s to find a home that supports independence, connection, and quality of life.
And this was only the beginning.
Over the coming weeks and months there would be property searches, viewings, discussions with supports, and many moving parts behind the
scenes.
But every journey starts with that first step.
And for this participant, that step had just been taken.

What happens when the search for the right SDA property officially begins?
