SDA Journey Series – Part Six: Finding a Potential Match

After weeks, and sometimes months, of searching, inspecting properties, and having ongoing conversations, there often comes a moment in the SDA journey where something changes.

A property appears that feels different from the others.

By this stage, the participant, their support team, and Regional Tenancy Manager Jenelle have a much clearer understanding of what is needed. The earlier inspections, discussions, and even the properties that didn’t quite work have all helped shape a clearer picture of what the right home should look like.

So, when a property comes along that seems to meet many of the participant’s needs, it is an exciting moment for everyone involved.

The home may be in the newly preferred area.
It may have the right design features.
It may suit the participant’s functional needs.
And it may work well for the supports that will be delivered in the home.

For the first time in the journey, it starts to feel like things are lining up.

But even when a property looks like the perfect match, there are still important steps to take.

For Jenelle, the next step is to begin working through what needs to happen to move forward with that property. This includes conversations with the landlord, the participant’s support team, and sometimes the NDIA to make sure the property and the participant’s funding and supports all align.

One of the most important parts of this stage is managing expectations.

When a participant finds a property, they can picture themselves living in, it is completely natural for excitement to build. After a long search, it can feel like the finish line is finally in sight.

But this is also the stage where careful coordination is required.

The tenancy manager has to balance the participant’s excitement with the practical requirements of the process, including approvals, compatibility with supports, and ensuring the property is ready and suitable for the participant’s needs.

It is a delicate balance between hope and process.

Between the emotional moment of finding a place that feels like home, and the practical steps required to make that home a reality.

Because finding a promising property is a big step forward.

But it is not the final step.

Now the team needs to work together behind the scenes to make sure everything aligns – the property, the supports, the funding, and the people involved.

This stage is where collaboration becomes more important than ever.

Because SDA is never a one-person process.

It takes a team working together to turn a promising property into someone’s home.

And this is where the next stage of the journey begins.
