SDA Journey Series – Part Nine: Settling In and Building a Home

Move-in day is a milestone.

But it’s not the finish line.

In many ways, it’s just the beginning.

After the boxes are unpacked and the initial excitement settles, the focus shifts to something even more important – what happens next.

Because creating a successful SDA outcome isn’t just about finding the right property.

It’s about ensuring that the home continues to work for the person living in it, every single day.

For Regional Tenancy Manager Jenelle, this stage is all about ongoing support, connection, and stability.

The early days after move-in are crucial.

It’s a time of adjustment.

New routines are being formed.
New environments are being navigated.
And new support dynamics are being established.

While everything may have been carefully planned, real life doesn’t always follow a perfect script.

That’s why continued oversight and communication are so important.

During this stage, the focus includes:

· Checking in regularly with the participant and their support team
· Ensuring supports are being delivered as planned and are meeting the participant’s needs
· Monitoring how the participant is settling into the home and the surrounding community
· Addressing any early concerns or adjustments quickly and collaboratively
· Supporting positive household dynamics in shared living environments

Because even small challenges, if left unaddressed, can impact the overall success of a tenancy.

And equally, small wins can build confidence, independence, and a genuine sense of belonging.

This stage is also where a house truly becomes a home.

Personal touches start to appear.
Routines begin to feel natural.
Connections to the local community start to grow.

For some participants, this may be the first time they’ve experienced this level of independence.

For others, it’s about finally having a space that is designed to support how they live, rather than working around limitations.

And that shift can be life changing.

Of course, ongoing tenancy management doesn’t stop after the first few weeks.

It continues throughout the life of the tenancy.

Because needs can change.

Supports can evolve.

And circumstances can shift over time.

Having a team in place to respond to those changes ensures that the home continues to be the right fit not just for now, but into the future.

At its core, this stage is about sustainability.

Not just creating a successful move-in…

It’s about supporting a successful, long-term outcome.

Because the goal has always been more than just filling a vacancy.

It’s about helping someone find a place where they can truly live well.
